The Sunday Stills Challenge this week was to show everyone your favorite place. Someplace where you feel at peace and can relax.
I asked Far Guy “Where is my favorite place?” He replied “Shell Lake.” He knows me well!
I have gone to this lake for almost sixty years. One of my favorite Uncle’s lived high on a hill overlooking this lake. My Grandfather built a small cabin across the road from the lake after he was widowed for the second time. My Mother used to bring us swimming here on hot summer evenings back when no one had air conditioning. I can still feel the coolness of the water on my skin and the sand underneath my feet.
February 2011
I like to visit in the summer evenings..there is usually a brisk breeze coming off the lake..it is even brisker in the winter when the lake is a sea of snow..except for the outlet to Shell River where the current keeps the water open.
There is always something to see…Canadian Geese and Great Blue Herons..Ducks..Swans and sometimes Loons. I believe that the photo above is a Great Blue Heron..and beyond him is a patch of Wild Rice.
This lake has beautiful sunsets

Sometimes my visits are all alone, sometimes I have my two best friends along.
Growing up I always thought that this would be a wonderful lake to live on. I have explored its shoreline..I know where all the best wildflowers are, I know when they bloom, I know what time of day to drive on over to catch the best light. I look at the for sale signs..and dream about what it would be like to live out the rest of my days along this lake. However I am too old to move, and I have too much “stuff.” I like my home in the woods..and as long as I can still visit my favorite place when ever the mood strikes me..I am happy!
I had a very hard time selecting photos for this challenge..I had so many to wade through:)
That looks like a cool lake! My Gramma had a lake by her cabin and I loved it there.
ReplyDeleteI can see why it is your favorite place. It is beautiful and very inviting. Everybody should have such a wonderful place to get away for some peaceful moments. You did an outstanding job capturing it in photos.
ReplyDeleteI really loved your pictures, I could almost imagine being there beside this beautiful lake. Well done. :)

The memories just add to all the peaceful feelings that the lake projects. It looks like a very nice place to be. I really miss Pokegama Lake but things for us just had to change.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and poignant post. I know exactly what you mean. I have several "favorite" places here where I live. And, even though we have some of the coldest, snowiest, most brutal winters in the whole USA, I could never leave it for long. I am lucky in that we were able to move on one of my favorite lakes when we retired and there isn't a day when I don't wake up and thank the Force for my blessings of being here.
ReplyDeleteConnie, These are such pretty photos. I can't begin to choose a favorite. Such sweet memories too. I now know that I was too old to move also!!!!! We are nearly dead! I think you have the best of both worlds. Live in your beautiful home in the woods and visit the lake throughout the year. Blessings to you all this week.
